after checking out seokguram and walking down the natural road, sunam and i walked around 불êµì‚¬ (bulguksa), the large and ancient buddhist temple in gyeongju.
bulguksa
a quiet, serene pond along the path into bulguksa
i just love these apparent guards before you get in
the other set of guards opposite the first two
this time around i noticed that each of the figures had a smaller figure like this at its feet
the main, but no longer accessible, stairs into bulguksa
there i am in front of the trees and the temple
the central building of bulguksa inside
a dragon carved among amazingly detailed roof paintings
another amazing painting in the rafters
who wouldn't want to have a knocker like that?
a few buddhist figures, again taken from outside because pictures inside were forbidden
the main courtyard with the two stone pagodas
steps from one level to another deeper within the compound
a smaller pavilion housing an even smaller stone pagoda
trees rising about the roof of one of the pavilions
in one section near the back were countless small piles of rocks like these
a young man and his mother were working on their own pile as we moved through
another section towards the back of the temple where it was much less crowded
looking back across the stairs that lead into the front of the temple
