early on the morning of tuesday, january 23rd i caught an express bus from seoul down to í?¬í•(pohang), a coastal city in southeastern korea. my friend 수남 (sunam) is from pohang, and she had recently moved back in with her parents there. we planned to take three days and visit pohang, 경주(gyeongju), and 부산(busan). i was excited because i'd been wanting to do this kind of trip to see more parts of korea, but had little opportunity to do so over the two years i'd been there.
pohang
a quiet korean river valley as seen from a rest stop along my route
i arrived at pohang's bus terminal around 11:00a
sunam took me back to her parents' house where i met her mother, who made a very delicious lunch for us. from there we went out for sunam to show me around her hometown of pohang. our first stop was the ocean, only about a half mile from her house.
factories were visible on the other side of the bay from pohang
we walked north towards a park sunam wanted to show me.
a man fishing of a big pile of cement jacks
the entrance to 환호해맞공 (sunrise park)
i like that the woman in this welcome sign is bowing to new park visitors
a pavilion to sit under overlooking the ocean and factories in the distant
the park actually went up hill and then back down on the other side away from the ocean.
a quiet park circle that was basically deserted on this tuesday afternoon
we exited the park towards some shops under massive apartment towers for a drink
towering apartment buildings such as these can be found all over korea
much more to come from this trip...
