my friend litza lives in astoria, queens, new york and is always a very gracious host when i come up to new york to visit, and this year was no different. she and her boyfriend ari let me stay longer than i'd expected, in total for five days and four nights. luckily their roommate jinny, who coincidentally is korean, was in korea visiting family so i was able to sleep in her room.

ample sunlight, plant life, and bookshelves make for a comfortable living room

this was the old living room arrangement, while i was there i helped litza reconfigure

after i got back from this trip i was showing my parents my pictures and my dad flipped when he saw the previous picture. it was precisely the painting on the wall that caused him to react. he explained that when he was young his father worked as a used car salesman and at one time he was the top seller for a given period and his prize was that painting. i think he had expected something better and was disappointed, but nevertheless hung in their house for some time after that. with that blueish face, it's not the kind of painting i could forget easily either, especially if it had been in my house. it was thus very understandable that my father would be so amazed to see that painting again.

i was very impressed to see and hear about all the cooking projects litza had been taking on since i'd last seen her. she and ari have a bread machine and seem to make almost all their own bread. on new year's eve, we had homemade pizzas (see the following post for more on that)!
