while visiting korea, yeo was staying with her aunt in a suburb outside seoul called 수지 (suji). when we hung out on saturday, yeo said her aunt would like to invite me to their house for dinner one night that week, so on tuesday, november 21 after work i met up with yeo in gangnam and took about an hour long bus ride down to her aunt's place.
they lived in a high-rise apartment building as many koreans do, and i was excited since i haven't had too many opportunities to visit a real korean home. it was a spacious apartment with a large, open living room right as you walk in. they had three bedrooms, one of which was converted into an office.
yeo's aunt and uncle are middle-aged, with two children in their early twenties. their son was off serving his mandatory military duty while their daughter was studying abroad in china. her uncle worked for samsung as a mechanical engineer or something like that, and her aunt was a homemaker who it sounded like spends a lot of time active in her church. her uncle could speak a bit of english, but mostly yeo translated for us.
her aunt prepared an amazing feast of seafood and bulgogi, along with tons of side dishes and soup. afterwards there were fresh korean apples and pears along with rice cake desserts and dried persimmons. i wanted to get some pictures of everything, but whipping out my camera in the middle of the meal just didn't seem right.
after dinner they broke out the photo albums and showed lots of pictures of yeo as a young girl, which was funny to see. finally around 11:00p it was about time for me to catch a bus back to seoul, but not before her aunt loaded me up with a bag full of dried persimmons and pear juice to drink for my cold. they offered to let me stay over rather than travel back to seoul, but since i had to work the next morning i preferred to get home.
unfortunately yeo and i waited in the cold for a bus back to seoul that never came, and about forty-five minutes later i resigned to staying the night there after all. they set me up with some blankets on the floor of the office, and in the morning yeo's aunt insisted i eat breakfast despite the fact that i was still full from dinner. i caught a bus back to seoul around 7:15a and slept for the hour long ride back to gangnam. after that i went home, had a shower, and went right back out to work.
